Play shines a spotlight on men’s mental-health

-

Acclaimed Australian actor John Wood will shine a spotlight on mental health when he performs at Horsham’s Wesley Performing Arts Centre next week.

Wood will present Carpe Diem, a contemporary portrayal of Australian males dealing with issues of health, grief, loss and depression.

Set in a fictional town in inland Australia, Carpe Diem portrays the friendship of Nev, a hardworking farmer, and John his stock-agent friend.

Both have been affected by the long-running drought, suffering their own personal crisis.

Wood said the play delivered mental-health messages in an entertaining, immediate and highly relevant way.

“It’s a very Australian thing – not just male, necessarily – to feel that it’s none of our business and that someone knows what they’re doing,” he said.

“But men need to ask the questions and not ignore their apparent depression or inner pain.”

Actor and Lifeline Albury general manager Chris Pidd said Carpe Diem stressed the importance of mate-ship and professional care in times of crises.

“This compelling story will help break down the stigma of seeking support early when life gets tough,” he said.

“The play depicts so beautifully how two mates can help each other in times of need.”

Carpe Diem will be in Horsham on April 5. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

A question and answer session with the actors and supper will follow the play.

The event is free of charge, but people can make gold coin donations to Healthy Minds Horsham.

Horsham Rural City Council has joined forces with Horsham East Rotary Club, Axis Employment, BCH Accountants and Horsham Veterinary Clinic and Hospital to present the play in Horsham as part of its annual mental-health program.
