Early wins boost Phantoms teams

-

Round two of Victorian Volleyball League saw Phantoms teams come away with four wins from six teams competing.

A premier men’s team registered its first win over struggling Heidelberg in four sets. Matthew Berry, Jack Hannan, Jayden Mcqueen, Nick Adamson and Cam Robinson all contributed to the victory and the boys will go into this week’s game against Renegades with confidence.

A reserves men’s team led by Tim Popple and Nathan Berry had to dig deep against Renegades, eventually coming out on top in five sets.

The team welcomed Bendigo southpaw Toby Dearaugo to the team and the experienced campaigner showed why he will be a key player going forward with clever hitting.

A division-two men’s team, with Aidan O’connor and Nathan Murphy on board, were on the wrong end of a five-set loss to Dandenong and will be out to reverse that result when they take on Monash this week.

Division-three boys, with Alan Jorgensen-price, Will Saligari and Aidan O’connor, enjoyed a five-set win over Mckinnon Volley to score their first win as a team.

The team will welcome Will Brennan into the side for this week’s game against Dandenong Red.

Division-two girls, with Chloe Brown, Eadie Garth-lindsay and Laelah Robertson, lowered their colors to Yarra Ranges in four sets.

The girls are 0-2 to start the season and have two chances this week to get their first win of the season when they take on Mckinnon Volley and Mornington in a double header at State Volleyball Centre.

Division-three girls enjoyed a straight-sets win over Cobras.

The girls, all playing state league for the first time, will welcome Tamikah Dockrill into the team for this week’s game against Yarra Ranges.

Dockrill, a member of the Volleyball Horsham Academy Program, has been developing nicely and will be a solid inclusion for the young team.
