‘Robot zoo’ at libraries

-

Wimmera children enjoyed a crash course in robotics during school-holiday workshops at Wimmera Regional Library Corporation branches.

Information technology and marketing manager Leanda Elliott said 25 children attended a ‘Robot Zoo – The Furals’ session in Horsham.

“We had a presenter come up from Melbourne to teach people how to build Lego animals,” she said.

“They built animals from Lego Technic, then attached small motors to them and connected them to a laptop. Then they used basic coding to make the animals move – it was a basic robotics session.”

The workshop, developed by Regional Arts Victoria, incorporates technology, design and critical and creative thinking.

Ms Elliott said the session was a hit.

“Some participants were more successful than others at getting their animals to move, but everyone really enjoyed it,” she said.

The corporation hosted eight robot zoo workshops, at Horsham, Stawell, Dimboola, Edenhope, Birchip, St Arnaud, Kaniva and Nhill branches. “Every session was well attended,” Ms Elliott said.

“The library has been very busy during the school holidays, particularly during holiday program activities in Horsham and Stawell.”

Stawell Library will host a 3D wooden flower workshop today while Warracknabeal branch will welcome a magician.

Horsham Library will host Dr Seuss themed activities tomorrow.
