Youth art on show at Charlegrark
West Wimmera Shire Council has sent an open invitation to young people across the region to experience a day of music, workshops, art and colour at Lake Charlegrark near Goroke.
The council will present Youth Art @ Charlegrark on April 30 to provide a public stage for young people creating work in all artistic genres to exhibit and perform their talents.
The council is encouraging people from secondary-school age up to 25 to participate in the day’s activities.
Council community support officer Amanda Munn said this year’s event was going to be ‘bigger than ever’.
“Jamie Austin is co-ordinating the music for Youth Art this year and has organised a tremendous line-up of local and regional entertainers,” she said.
“The Skategoats, a punk-rock band from Mount Gambier, will be appearing to entertain and successful Melbourne artist Tracey Mock, a former Kaniva resident, will informally chat with our budding artistic community. She is proof that growing up in a small country town does not limit your capabilities or your success.
“Come and check out the high-calibre art that will be on display in the W Crabtree Hall and have a chat with Tracey.”
Ms Munn said organisers were also proud to welcome renowned Clunes sculptor Janet Cameron.
“She will display her limestone sculptures and lead limestone-sculpting workshops for people of all ages,” she said.
“Janet sculpts predominantly in Mount Gambier limestone and her inspiration comes from ‘life, anything living especially plants, but more so water’. Janet finds the sight and sound of it stimulating as well as relaxing – it’s like music, good for the soul.”
Cameron’s workshops will run from 10.30am to 11.30am, 12.30pm to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Bookings are essential.
“Heartfelt of Kaniva will lead felting workshops, ‘Waldo the Great’ will be roving through the crowd showing off his magical prowess and giving people the opportunity to learn some of his greatest tricks, also through a workshop on the day,” Ms Munn said.
She said Run Charlie Run, organised by Kaniva College Quest students, was a ‘colour run’ with a twist and this year included an obstacle course.
“It starts at 11am. Prepare to get coloured and muddied, wear your whites and your old shoes. There will be hot showers available after the run so people can stay on and enjoy the entertainment,” she said.
“To top off the day we have the Coastal Flyboard coming. They are going to give young people from the age of 12 and above turns on the flyboard in the middle of the lake. Spaces for this are limited so this event definitely requires you to book.”
Flyboard rides will start at 9am. Participants need to book a time and can get a consent form and information about any other events from West Wimmera Shire Council on 5392 7700.
The council, Kaniva, Goroke and Edenhope colleges as well as Desert Edge Art Gallery’s Karen Wiseman are key partners working on the event, collaborating to bring a feast of art of all genres.
