Waste committee reviews feedback

-

Green-waste recycling bins, hard-waste collection and increased kerbside recycling have surfaced as services for consideration in a new Horsham waste-management plan.

A steering committee helping Horsham Rural City Council has listed the services in response to community feedback on waste management as part of a review.

Council technical services director John Martin said the community made comments through council and Nati Noticeboard Facebook pages.

The public also had an opportunity to email comments to the council.

“All the comments received were presented to the committee and have been listed in an update on council’s website,” Mr Martin said.

The committee has also suggested the council provide further information to the community to highlight some of the options for existing services, including the opportunity of additional recycling bins at no charge, and the opportunity to drop metal waste at transfer stations free of charge.

“The committee has discussed the overall costs of the council’s waste service and heard the service is not funded by general rates, but through separate charges for the waste bin service and money collected for gate fees at transfer stations and Dooen Landfill,” Mr Martin said.

“The committee is looking at options to improve the council’s waste services, based on the community’s goals, and will explore how the costs of any additional services would be funded.”

More details on the strategy process, including community feedback received are on the council’s website www.hrcc.vic.gov.au/infrastructure/waste-management/wastestrategy.

The committee will continue to explore waste-management work during the second half of 2017.
