Northfest project takes shape

-

The artistic talents of students from Horsham’s Holy Trinity Lutheran School and Horsham College’s Mckenzie Creek campus will soon be on show for the community.

Students at the schools have created a unique park bench, made from skateboards, for Horsham’s Cornell Park.

The bench is this year’s Northfest Family Fun Day Legacy Project.

Northfest, at Cornell Park on November 11, is designed to bring people together for recreation opportunities while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Each Northfest event involves a legacy project that can be left behind after the festival for the community to use and enjoy. The new ‘skateboard seat’ under construction will feature student artwork painted onto wooden skateboards fashioned into a bench seat.

The skateboards will have a steel frame constructed by Onsite Engineering and be installed by Horsham Rural City Council.

Northfest co-ordinator Janine Harfield said as well leaving behind a lasting footprint from Northfest, the legacy project helped Horsham district youth to build relationships and fosters a sense of ownership and pride in community spaces.

“While the project provides an opportunity for local youth to be involved in the creation of something that will directly benefit their community, it also facilitates the formation of new relationships between young people and local agency staff,” she said.

Project partners include Grampians Community Health, Wimmera Health Care Group and Horsham Rural City Council.

This year the project has also had support from a Horsham Sports and Community Club donation.

The free festival, which will run from 11.30am to 3.30pm, will feature Horsham district musical bands, children’s rides and activities, dance displays, healthy food, art and craft exhibitions and more.
