Top five all but set; Demons lead charge

- BY JONATHAN BOX

With Mininera and District Football League finals just around the corner, the top five seems all but set, with Lismorederrinallum still four points clear as outright leader.

This week Lismore-derrinallum will finish its home-and-away season by hosting SMW Rovers.

The Demons are coming off a 13goal victory over Tatyoon, which will give them plenty of confidence moving into the finals series.

Ryan Elliott again had a day out, kicking six goals to establish him as equal league goal-kicking leader, while Bradley and Michael Lockyer contributed five apiece.

James Boag, James Halloran and Tim Glasson were best players in the game where the Demons led from start to finish.

SMW Rovers, however, are going into this week’s game after a 17-point loss to Penshurst.

This loss greatly diminished the Bulldogs’ chances of playing in the 2017 finals.

It was a close-fought battle throughout the game with the Bulldogs going into three-quarter time two goals up. However, a six-goal-to-one final term from the Bombers was too much for Rovers to match.

Jarryd Underwood and Lachlan Pickering were the only two multiple goal-scorers for the Bulldogs, with John Forbes again leading the way along with Adrian Burn who held his end up in defence.

Lismore-derrinallum will use this weekend’s game as major preparation for the finals, while the Bulldogs will also be keen to finish the season off on a high and knock off the ladder leaders.

In what will probably be the match of the round, Tatyoon hosts Moyston-willaura in a clash between second and third.

A victory for the Pumas could potentially see them take top spot, while a win for Tatyoon would have them secure third place and earn a finals second chance.

Tatyoon’s loss last weekend to Lismore-derrinallum saw the Hawks keep up with the Demons and trail by only 17 points at half time.

But the Demons kicked away in the second half, putting 11 goals on the board to Tatyoon’s one.

Tatyoon’s David Brady, Geoffrey Jolly and Tim Mcdougall all played well in the loss, while Adrian Pilgrim and Tom Veale were the only two Hawks to score multiple goals.

Moyston-willaura on the other hand is coming off a massive 21-goal win over Glenthompson-dunkeld.

The Pumas dominated from the first bounce, kicking 9.6 in the first quarter, while the Rams failed to score, and continued to outscore their opponents in every quarter.

Daniel Guinane led the charge in front of goal, collecting five goals. He was the Pumas’ most productive player in front of the sticks.

Guinane was also best, along with Josh Bywater, Billy Laurie and Rhys Cronin, who managed 13 goals between the four of them.

The Pumas will be keen to take top spot away from the Demons to get the first week of finals off, so this is set to be a great game.

In other matches, Woorndoo-mortlake hosts Penshurst, Wickliffe-lake Bolac takes on Caramut, Glenthompson-dunkeld and Great Western play off and Hawkesdale-macarthur travels to Ararat to take on the Eagles.
