Team closes in on first victory

-

Mitre 10 might have lost again in Stawell Friday night tennis against top side Frewstal, but the side has improved every week.

The previous time the team faced Frewstal it lost by 43 games. This round it went down by only 14.

Frewstal held the lead early and went into the tea break with an eight-game lead and extended it to 17 games before the main mixed and singles sets.

Each side then won three sets to finish the night to give Frewstal the final 14-game winning margin.

Frewstal’s Tarnee Orr and Angus Williams had unbeaten rounds. Richard Dodds’ hot form continued for Mitre 10 with an 8-1 victory with Seth Blake against Chris Simpkin and Mark Walls, his best score in his three-set night.

Stawell Toyota hit back from last week’s loss to defeat Farrers Tyrepower by 12 games. Stawell Toyota hit the courts running, winning seven sets to four before the tea intermission and held off the fast-finishing Tyrepower, which then won seven of the remaining 12 sets.

Stawell Toyota’s Declan Pyke and Jonah O’shannessy combined to win their doubles against Les Mcleod and Dartagnan Walls 8-2, while for Farrers Tyrepower Amy Hodgetts and Dakota Cosson gave their all.

This week Stawell Toyota takes on Mitre 10 and Farrers Tyrepower will look to upset Frewstal’s run of victories.
