The team from David O Jones Mitre 10 has celebrated its first win for the season in Stawell’s Friday night spring tennis competition.
The night did not quite begin how Mitre 10 would have wanted, with Andrew and Howard Dunn going down to Blair Hart and Joel Freeland 0-8. But from then on the team played its best tennis for the year to lead by 14 games before the tea break.
Stawell Toyota picked up a few games in the next series of sets but couldn’t peg back Mitre 10’s lead and eventually went down by seven games.
Mitre 10’s number-one woman Kim Hutton led from the front by winning her three sets, the best an 8-1 victory in her first set played.
In the night’s second match, top side Frewstal suffered an upset loss as Farrrers Tyrepower scored a surprise four-game victory. Frewstal started well, taking seven of the first 11 sets played and it looked like another big win was heading its way.
But Tyrepower lifted in the mixed doubles sets to win four of five sets with margins of 8-3, 8-3, 8-1 and 8-4 and stormed home to win.
Tyrepower’s men Joel Freeland and Aiden Lee were behind their side’s win with three-set nights and Frewstal’s Angus Williams did his team proud by winning three sets he contested.
Tight games are expected this week because the last time these four sides met seven games was the highest margin. Toyota plays Frewstal and Mitre 10 takes on Tyrepower.
