Farr joins Exell at Kalkee helm

The Weekly Advertiser Horsham - - Sport - BY DEAN LAWSON

Highly decorated Wimmera football player and coach Stuart Farr has joined Hamish Exell in a joint coaching role with Horsham District league club Kalkee.

The multiple premiership leader will take the non-playing reins on the sidelines for the Kees, while Exell provides on-field direction.

Kees president Trevor Mcrae, in confirming the appointment, said the club had been in negotiations with Farr for the past 12 months.

“He’s happy to bring his family out to the club and be involved,” he said.

“He has a lot of experience and will be great for Hamish and other guys who want to take on leadership roles.

“We have no doubt he will be a great mentor in the coaching role.”

Farr rose through the ranks with Horsham in Wimmera league, where he became a key player and then coach in a remarkable string of Demons premierships.

He won statewide recognition for his coaching prowess and then helped elevate Dimboola to a Wimmera league flag winner.

It was at Dimboola that he formed a coaching alliance with Exell.

Mr Mcrae said the club was confident the Farr and Exell combination would represent a successful fit for the Kees.

“Hamish had a tough job with injuries rocking us throughout last season and he did great job considering the circumstances,” he said.

“He and Stuart were at Dimboola in partnership and were a big part of their success.

“So we’re hoping that in the coming months our club will get a lot from the appointment.”

Mr Mcrae said Kalkee was also talking to several potential recruits and, when it came to assistant coaches, was leaving its options open.

“Obviously with the player points system in place we’d love to get some of our former juniors back from the past 10 years,” he said.

“That is always something that’s on the radar. It’s all a work in progress.”

Pre-season training

Kalkee started 6pm Monday and Wednesday pre-season training at Horsham’s Sunnyside oval on Monday this week.

The playing group will train through to December before a Christmas break and then resume in the new year.

Mr Mcrae said the club hoped to announce further coaching appointments in netball as well as football in the next three to four weeks.
