Hornets back to best against Flyers

- BY SARAH SCULLY

Horsham Lady Hornets coach Gareth Hiscock was pleased to see his charges ‘back to their best’ at the weekend as they recorded a convincing win over Swan Hill.

The Hornets defeated the Flyers 84-55 at home in round nine of the Country Basketball League northwest conference on Sunday.

Hiscock said the Flyers matched the Hornets in the first term.

“We had a 10-point break early and they pegged it back and there were only a couple of points in it at quarter time,” he said.

Hiscock said a strong second quarter set up the triumph, with the Lady Hornets ticking along to a comfortable win.

“We had a really good contribution from the Iredell twins, Maddie and Ema, and Bec Mcintyre and Caity Story were strong under the basket, which gave us a physical edge on the court,” he said.

He said Liv Jones and Georgia Hiscock also acquitted themselves well.

“For the past few weeks, even before we lost to Bendigo, we hadn’t been playing our best,” Hiscock said.

“I feel we got our mojo back a bit on Sunday and I’d like to take that into this week’s double header.”

The Hornets, who sit atop the conference ladder, will meet fifth placed Maryborough on Saturday night and bottom side Castlemaine on Sunday.

Hiscock said he was expecting Maryborough to give the Hornets a run for their money.

“They’ve had some really good results since the last time we played them,” he said. “We will need to be at our best to beat them.

“Castlemaine has had a tough season. They haven’t won a game this year, but you never know.”

Men

The Horsham Hornets men’s team will also return to the court at the weekend for matches against Maryborough and Castlemaine.

The ladder-leading Horsham outfit is coming off a 30-point win over Swan Hill.

Tim Pickert continued his outstanding season with a 27-point haul, with all nine players contributing to the scoreboard.

Juniors Mitch Martin, 11 points, Sam Breuer, 9, and Harley Pope, 4, impressed while gaining valuable senior experience.

The men will take to the court at Horsham Basketball Stadium at 8pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday.

The women will kick off the action at 6pm on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

Ararat

Ararat Redbacks will contest south-west conference matches against Colac on Saturday.

The women will host the Kookas at Ararat Fitness Centre at 4pm followed by the men at 6pm.
