Smith wins top accolade
Natimuk and District Field and Game member Brad Smith held his own against tough competition from across the country on Monday, triumphing in the club’s biggest event in several years.
Smith scored 92-100 in the 100-target classic to win the highgun accolade.
Club president Tom Hardman said 201 shooters converged on the Natimuk course for the event.
“We have monthly shoots but this is our biggest event in years,” he said.
“We had competitors from Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. Ballarat brought a bus down, which is good, and we had shooters from clubs across the state including Geelong, Warrnambool and Morwell.
“It was good to see Brad shoot the highest overall score for the day.
“A couple of competitors are internationally ranked – one is about sixth in the world – so to see a local guy take it home against such strong competition was great.”
Mr Hardman said forming a partnership with Horsham business J & A Shooting Supplies contributed to the event’s success.
“We started up this event over the past two years. It’s a 100-target event, which is a longer one. Having J & A sponsor it has upped the ante and we’re now offering $8000 in prizes,” he said.
“Bill Jorgensen is heavily involved in the sport, which helps because he knows a lot of people and has helped spread the word.
“We’ve had some great feedback about the event. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day.
“Being a long weekend a lot of people stayed in Horsham or Natimuk, so it also provided a boost for the region’s businesses, which is great.”
