Unbeaten season

-

Crowe Horwath completed its fairytale season in Stawell Tennis Club’s Friday night competition with a crushing grand-final victory over Farrers Tyrepower.

Crowe Horwath was never headed in the demolition job, its 18-176 to 9-141 result taking it through the season undefeated. Skipper Blair Hart continued his rich vein of form, winning all three sets and he wasn’t alone with Ben Martin, Aiden Lee, Mick Sullivan and Phil Hutton all dominant throughout the evening and desperate to get their hands on the premiership cup.

Tyrepower’s Angus Williams and Lachlan Cox tried to breathe life into the contest with an 8-0 victory. However, that small glimmer of hope was soon snuffed out when Sullivan combined with both Lee and then Hutton for 8-1 and 8-0 victories to put the result beyond doubt.

Williams was the lone shining light on a miserable night for Tyrepower, taking home the Chris Tilley award for best player in the grand final.

Williams won all three sets 8-6, 8-1 and 8-0, but had little support. Kim Hutton and Erin Freeland could hold their heads high in the women’s section, which was a hard-fought affair.

In the battle for third it was Frewstal that came out on top, capping off a tough year for David O. Jones Mitre 10, winning 16-166 games to 11-156 games.

Frewstal veteran Howard Dunn and Kasey Mornane were outstanding in the triumph. Neve O’shannessy battled hard for Mitre 10.

Annual Stawell Tennis Club championship finals were on Saturday afternoon in front of a big crowd.

Hart was crowned champion in the blue-ribbon men’s open singles, reigning supreme over Joel Freeland, 6-2, 6-3 in a hotly contested final. Hutton outplayed Amy Hodgetts in a hard-hitting women’s final, to etch her name on the singles honour board for the first time.
