Magpies, Lions in testing encounter

- BY JONATHAN BOX

The approach of round four of Mininera and District Football League reveals Wickliffe-lake Bolac and Great Western have continued their good start to the season and sit unbeaten on the ladder.

Great Western’s most recent win was over close neighbours Ararat Eagles by nine points.

The Lions came out firing and went into the first-quarter break 20 points up, and although the Eagles outscored their opposition in the second and fourth quarters, it was not enough to hold off Great Western.

Brady Miller, Danny Grellet and Justin Thomas were good performers for the Lions, along with Steven Lorenzo, Samuel Cocks and Benjamin Birch-burton, again strong in front of goals adding another 11 majors between them to their healthy tally of 39.

With new-found form, the Lions will be eager to take on last year’s premier Lismore-derrinallum. Lismore-derrinallum has had a slow start to the season with two losses from its first two games, however, found its way back on the winners list by beating SMW Rovers by 35 points.

Todd Lamont and Tim Glasson provided plenty of drive from the midfield and with the class of Michael Lockyer adding six goals, the Demons sailed away with the victory.

Both teams will be eager to add a win at this early stage of the season.

A big game to watch this week will be between Wickliffe-lake Bolac and Tatyoon, at Tatyoon.

The Magpies have had a massive start to their season, winning all their games by more than five goals, the latest being over Woorndoo-mortlake.

Will Slattery was best, kicking five goals, and with the support of James Quayle, Chris Keilar and Darcy Lewis up forward, and Bailey Veale and Brad Keilar in the middle, they are certainly proving tough to beat.

Tatyoon will head into this week’s challenge after a 14-point loss to Glenthompson-dunkeld.

Scores were equal at three-quarter time, however, it was the Rams that pushed away at the end.

David Brady and Trevor and John Wanganeen did their part in front of goal, booting three apiece, while Shaun Orr, Jack Fraser and Jack Antonio provided plenty of ball movement around the ground.

The Tatyoon Hawks will certainly have their work cut out for them and will need to be firing on all cylinders.

In other games, Moyston-willaura plays Hawkesdale-macarthur at Willaura, Ararat Eagles travel to Penshurst, SMW Rovers take on Glenthompson-dunkeld and Woorndoo-mortlake hosts Caramut.
