Wet weather uncertainty

Much of the Wimmera-mallee might have to continue waiting for a profound autumn break despite heavy rain forecast for much of Victoria this week.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said the bulk of heavy rain would be in southern and eastern parts of the state, although he expected some to spill into the fringes of the southern Wimmera.

“The rain will tail off considerably to the north, but the southern edge of the Wimmera might receive falls of between five and 25 millimetres,” he said.

“For parts of southern and eastern Victoria this system will represent the autumn break, but that’s unlikely for the north-west.”

Mr Carlyon said another weaker front was on its way next week, but it too, would slip to the south and again most likely produce rain only on the Wimmera’s southern fringe.

“It might be that the Wimmera and Mallee pick up only bits and pieces with a few millimetres each week rather than one big rain,” he said.

“But we are certainly entering a cooler period of weather.”
