Volleyball history

- BY DAVID BERRY

Volleyball history was made at Western Zone finals when for the first time all four Wimmera teams progressed through to School Sport Victoria state finals.

In an overwhelming endorsement of the strength of school volleyball in the Wimmera, Horsham College senior girls, Murtoa College senior boys and intermediate girls and St Brigid’s College intermediate boys recorded a clean sweep of matches against teams from Warrnambool and Ballarat.

This is a great result for volleyball in all three schools and justifies the hard work of both the students and teachers who commit time to their students.

The result also underlines the importance of teams gaining valuable match play in the lead up to these events.

Players receive this through their support of Volleyball Horsham domestic competition.

The two intermediate teams have made it a hat-trick of state finals, and the Murtoa girls, who made the semi-finals last year, will be keen to go one step further this year.

For the St Brigid’s boys, a semi-final appearance will be their goal as a minimum this year, because they are more experienced than previous years.

The intermediate teams play in the state finals on May 24 with the seniors the following day, with matches to be played at the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong.
