Bowlers win

-

Four Horsham tenpin bowlers have starred at the 2018 Australian Junior Championship, winning individual and team events in Melbourne.

Sophie Martin, Bevan Brooke, Shania Milsome and Justin Mccallum were part of the Victorian team to claim the President’s Shield, while Martin triumphed in her individual event.

The bowlers play and train at Horsham Lanes and Games.

Managing director Wayne Watkins said Martin was outstanding in her individual event, winning the Classic Cup by 38 pins.

“She is part of an Australian squad and might get the chance to play for Australia,” he said.

“Anyone in Australia can get selected for the national squad and Sophie has managed to get picked – only 12 girls make up the team.”

Martin competed against 50 girls and won against all 23 finalists, including the 2017 champion.

Mr Watkins also praised the efforts of Martin’s team-mates.

“There are 14 people in the Victorian team, seven girls and seven boys,” he said.

“The boys came third and the girls came first and their combined points won them the Presidents Shield.

“The Presidents Shield is the pinnacle in junior bowling.”
