‘Give and take’ key to longevity

- – Charlotte Hilbig

Horsham couple Doris and Hugh Mcdonald will celebrate 70 years of marriage on Tuesday.

The Mcdonalds said they looked forward to marking their platinum anniversary with their six children, 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and friends at Horsham City Bowling Club on Saturday.

Hugh, 94, and Doris, 93, married at Camberwell Our Lady of Victories Basilica in 1948. They said they had enjoyed playing sport together throughout their marriage.

The Mcdonalds have played tennis and golf and only recently gave up playing bowls.

The couple lived in Melbourne and Launceston, Tasmania, before moving to Horsham, where they remember buying one of the first refrigerators that came to town.

Mrs Mcdonald said she and her husband believed their similar interests and good fortune were to thank for their successful marriage.

“It’s all about give and take… although I’ve taken more than I’ve given,” she said.

Mr Mcdonald was quick to disagree: “Don’t know about that.”
