Students head ‘under the sea’ for production

-

Horsham St Brigid’s College students will head ‘under the sea’ for the school’s latest production, The Little Mermaid.

Rehearsals for the August production are in full swing.

The show is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea to gain a human soul, and the animated Disney movie of the same name.

Teacher and The Little Mermaid producer Vicki Thomas said cast members had been busy learning songs and harmonies and had started the process scene.

Mrs Thomas said the production team was already impressed with the cast’s commitment to the show.

“Many of the students had already learnt songs and lines over the holiday period,” she said.

“It has been wonderful to see the older students welcome and mentor new and younger members of the cast. The sense of ‘family’ for the cast is already beginning to show.”

Mrs Thomas of blocking each said behindthe-scenes activities were also coming along well.

“Costumes have started to be made – ‘Sebastian’ and ‘Ursula’ look incredible and have been created by some very talented locals,” she said.

“The set construction process has also begun.”

Horsham Arts Council member Erin Boutcher will direct the show.

Miss Boutcher is in her first year of teaching at St Brigid’s College and has completed a Bachelor of Arts – Acting at Ballarat Academy of Performing Arts.

“Her involvement in Horsham Arts Council since the age of 12 has seen her in various roles including assistant director, artistic advisor and set designer,” Mrs Thomas said.

“The Music Theatre Guild of Victoria recently awarded Erin for her set design in HAC’S production of ‘Rent’.”

The college will present The Little Mermaid in Horsham Town Hall on August 9, 10 and 11 at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available at the town hall box office or online at www.horshamtownhall. com.au.
