Council scheme helps business
When Grampian Concept Homes rebranded in 2018 to SALTWOOD Build, owners Ken and Dawn Clark wanted to expand their brand to better reflect their passion and craftsmanship.
An open day at its showroom at a former Stawell Butter Factory site on Friday highlighted the firm’s expertise and also how a Northern Grampians Shire Council support scheme can work.
The project has involved turning an historic yet derelict building into an impressive business showroom.
Mr and Mrs Clark took on the hard work required to meet their vision and were keen to explore what support the council could offer for the project.
Mayor Tony Driscoll said the council economic development unit’s business assistance scheme was exactly what the Clarks were seeking.
Cr Driscoll said through the business assistance scheme, council officers could provide financial help such as waiving building and planning-permit fees, guidance and support to help the Clarks meet requirements of a commercial building project, as well as advice and encouragement.
“The scheme is available to businesses in our shire,” he said.
“It is important in helping maintain and nurture current businesses to grow and thrive and to encourage new businesses into our community.
“This is essential for our shire to stay sustainable.
“Our local communities benefit from helping businesses such as SALTWOOD Build succeed.
“They bought a neglected shell back to a beautiful and productive space.
“They bring new business into town, they provide employment to locals, offer a career path to some of the keen students who undertake work experience with them, then go on to take up an apprenticeship and are now fully qualified tradesmen and women.”
Cr Driscoll said he encouraged any business owners in Northern Grampians Shire keen to discuss help that might be available to them to call council’s economic development unit on 5358 8700.
