Magpies cruise into grand final

The Weekly Advertiser Horsham - - Sport - BY JONATHAN BOX

Although Wickliffe-lake Bolac had a slow start to its Mininera and District Football League finals campaign, the Magpies did not disappoint and cruised to their way into their third consecutive grand final appearance.

Penshurst had all the play in the first quarter of the semi-final against the Magpies and while kicking two goals, kept its opponent goal-less as Matt Rentsch and Chris Eales worked strongly in the centre. However, Penshurst’s lead was short lived as the game pushed into the second quarter, adding another two goals, but with Wickliffe-lake Bolac pushing forward with seven.

The floodgates then opened with the Magpies booting another 10 for the game to the Bombers’ three. The final margin was 66 points.

James Quayle had a massive day in front of goal for the winners, booting eight and named best on ground.

Wickliffe-lake Bolac will now wait to see who wins this week’s preliminary final between Penshurst and Tatyoon to see whom it faces in the grand final.

With Penshurst having a couple of injuries, the rest of the team will have to step up if the Bombers want to perform well against the rampaging Hawks.

Penshurst failed to produce a multiple goal-scorer in Saturday’s game but with the likes of Rentsch, Eales, Ashton Tresidder and Oscar Linke in good form, this game is set to be a great

build-up for the grand final. Tatyoon, which almost fell short of making the finals, has again shown that when it comes to September action it cannot be underestimated.

Tatyoon displayed this with a massive win over Glenthompson-dunkeld last week.

Tatyoon came out firing in the first quarter, booting six straight and maintaining a hefty lead despite the Rams keeping their opponents to only three points in the second term.

The damage continued after half time, with the Hawks adding 11 goals to their tally.

Jack Antonio, Shaun Orr and Rick Henricksen were the best players on the day, with Henricksen and Trevor-john Wanganeen booting three goals apiece.

With a grand final berth at stake and their season on the line, this game is building up to be a great contest between two strong sides.

The senior game starts at 2.15pm at Willaura Recreation Reserve.
