Public speakers make state final

-

Ararat College yeareight student James Mullin will join Nhill Secondary College’s Zara Clark at Victorian Legacy Junior Public Speaking Awards in Melbourne on October 22.

The pair will compete against the state’s best at the Shrine of Remembrance.

James and Zara won their way through to the state final with success at a preliminary final in Bendigo.

The preliminary final included students from Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Ouyen as well as Ararat and Nhill.

Ararat Legacy secretary Dianne Radford said James was the third student from the Ararat Legacy region to represent the club in a state final.

“We are looking forward to supporting James in his quest at this level,” she said.

“He did Ararat proud with his exceptional presentation of a five-minute prepared speech ‘Never Diss Ability’ about his younger brother Lachie, and an impromptu speech ‘what characteristics make an ideal hero and why?’

James progressed through to the final after winning in Ararat in early August.

“Winning in Ararat was a great accolade,” he said.

“However in Bendigo I found the competition go well and truly up a notch.

“After presenting my fiveminute speech I knew I had to deliver on the two-minute impromptu speech as the result would be close. The standard of presentations by all the students was very high overall and being announced a winner by the judges was a surprise, however, really satisfying.”
