Ceremony to honour relay regulars

- BY SARAH SCULLY

Horsham and District Relay For Life committee members will recognise a new crop of people who have made outstanding contributions to the event, at a dinner next month.

The committee introduced a hall of fame in 2017 and will induct new members on October 13.

Committee member Emilie-rae Woodhead said the hall of fame dinner, at Coughlin Park Community Centre from 7.30pm, would celebrate the triumphs of the region’s relay participants throughout the past 19 years.

“Last year the inaugural event took place with such great joy and pride and this year is set to be the same,” she said.

“Each year there are so many great people, teams and businesses who have played a major part in the Wimmera relay’s success, right from the very beginning up until now.

“Our hall of fame evening is a way to recognise the community’s support of Relay for Life, year in and year out.

“We will induct businesses, teams and individuals on the night.”

Miss Woodhead said the evening would highlight people and businesses in the community that contributed and made Relay for Life such a special event – one that people would want to return to each year.

“The people of the Wimmera have always been so generous in their kind donations towards our fight for cancer, each and every single year, and our hall of fame event is a way to say thank you and recognise the community’s ongoing support,” she said.

“This year we are again having live entertainment, along with some fantastic speakers from Cancer Council Victoria who will give us some inside knowledge about how we make a difference each year with the money that we raise.”

Research awards

Cancer Council Victoria research award winners – teams that raise more than $5000 for the organisation in a year – will be announced on the night.

The award allows the teams to allocate the money towards a cancer research project of their choice.

Tickets for the hall of fame evening cost $15 and are available from Freijah Menswear, Horsham.

Light refreshments will available on the night.

“The night is set to be a great one and I encourage all past relayers, sponsors, committee members and other members of the public to come along, have an enjoyable night and celebrate all the great things we are doing to help also be the fight back against cancer in our community,” Miss Woodhead said. The winner of this year’s Paint The Town Purple campaign will also be announced during the evening.

“This is a new aspect of the hall of fame event this year, which we hope will draw more people in,” Miss Woodhead said.
