Rowers set flying challenge

-

Dimboola Rowing Club members have signed up for a 90-kilometre rowing challenge to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

The club has entered eight juniors and three adults in Saturday’s Flying Doctor Rowathon.

The event, now in its 27th year, will see participants row ‘90 kilometres for 90 years’ to celebrate the service’s 90th anniversary.

The Dimboola crew will row 90 kilometres from Mildura’s Apex Park to Wentworth, then complete a loop around Wentworth, New South Wales.

Organiser Jenni Brand said her fellow club-mates looked forward to the challenge.

“The kids saw the promotion of the Royal Flying Doctors Rowathon last Easter and decided they wanted to have a go,” she said.

“They’ve been talking about it all year so far and we’ve been training constantly.

“We have a range of 13 to 16-year-old kids and the older masters.”

Brand would said participants row on both the Murray and Darling rivers. “They’ll do 25 kilometres and then stop for morning tea, 25 kilometres then lunch, 20 kilometres then afternoon tea and back to Wentworth for a meal and to relax,” she said.

“We are also fundraising for the Flying Doctors.

“This year’s money goes towards mental health in regional Victoria.

“So far we’ve raised $600 but more donations are more than welcome via the Everyday Hero and Flying Doctors websites and Dimboola Rowing Club.”
