Carols again in Ararat gardens

Ararat families will celebrate a quarter of a century of faith and festive cheer on Saturday when they gather for Ararat Carols by Candlelight.

Saturday night will be the 25th time the Ararat community gathers at Alexandra Gardens for the annual celebration.

The carols, organised by long-time community service group Ararat Y’smen and Y’smenettes, have attracted up to 3000 people at past events.

Event spokesman Joe Perry said Saturday’s gathering again promised to be a big night of singing, entertainment and good cheer.

He said a barbecue would start at 6pm, with carols and entertainment from 7pm before a fireworks display about 10pm.

“We put the carols on each year to allow the people of Ararat district to get together for a big community night free of charge,” he said.

“This is an event put on for Ararat district people by Ararat district people and I can tell you that the amount of emerging talent in this community is second to none.

“We have a junior as well as city band, a dance group and a couple of school choirs as well as other entertainers, which will make for a great night.

“We have an open invitation for anyone who cares to come and celebrate the carols with us and we particularly encourage the people of Ararat and district to come along.

“It’s a wonderful night to be had by all and it always has a great atmosphere and relaxed environment.

“Chances are we will also get another visit from the jolly old fella in red.”

Mr Perry said last year’s carols attracted between 1000 and 2000 people, many of them children.

“People might like to buy a sausage, drink or a battery-operated candle, but otherwise everything is free of charge,” he said.

“As always there will be plenty of activities for children and despite being summer, we encourage people to consider the weather and if appropriate bring warm clothes.”
