Learner drivers program success
A Licencing the Wimmera program through Centre for Participation has helped 11 learner drivers to gain their probationary licences since July.
The program’s acting co-ordinator Stephanie Thomson said the numbers reflected ‘fantastic’ success.
“It shows the dedication and support of the volunteer mentors as well as the commitment of the learners wanting to succeed,” she said.
“Our driver mentors gain a real sense of achievement and pride in helping a young person attain their licence.
“And, with the Wimmera being rural and remote there is a real need for our young people to have the opportunity to learn how to drive.
“We encourage anyone aged under 21 who has difficulty in accessing a car and fully licenced driver to help them achieve their 120 hours of driving practice to contact us, school counsellors or employment providers for more information about the program.”
Centre for Participation is also encouraging fully licenced drivers who are interested in helping a young person gain their on-road practice to attend the next driver mentor training session in January.
