‘Absolutely fabulous’

-

An exhibition of works by artists from Federation University’s ‘Absolutely Fabulous Studio’ at Natimuk’s Goat Gallery will conclude this weekend.

The exhibition kicked off with an opening night on November 30 that was attended by about 50 people.

The exhibition is a collection of prints and paintings from seven Horsham district artists – Peta Adamson, Sue Devlin, Joan Goad, Joan Johns, Yvonne Preusker, Angela Walker and Ron Penrose.

The seven are former art students at Federation University.

Mr Penrose said the art-lovers had continued to meet at the university and use its studio space despite the absence of a visual arts lecturer.

“We no longer have a lecturer but we still go along because it’s a great space to work in and we support each other,” he said.

“We critique each other’s work and give each other ideas of what to change and what to do.”

Mr Penrose said the exhibition was a good way to promote the use of the Goat Gallery, which features local artists.

“The gallery director Rob Grenfell is always looking for artists to hold the space and keep it open,” he said.

“It’s a nice space – you have to man it yourself, but it’s a great gallery.”

Mr Penrose encouraged peo- ple to check out the final two days of the exhibition on Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.

Entry is free and all works are for sale.

Mr Penrose said anyone who was interested could apply to use the studio space at Federation University.

He said the seven Absolutely Fabulous members usually met each Thursday from about 9am to 5pm.

“That’s available to other people at Fed Uni,” he said.

“Associate Professor Geoff Lord has opened it up to anyone who has a basic knowledge of how the uni works and its occupational health and safety processes.

“They have to do a little interview process but they can then come along and hire the space for a very reasonable amount.”

The Goat Gallery is at 87A Main Street, Natimuk.
