Tussle for ladder spots

-

Two wins separate second from second-last on Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant ladder as teams prepare IRU WKH ¿QDO URXQG EHIRUH WKH Christmas-new Year break.

Horsham Lawn shook off a narrow defeat at the hands of Haven in round eight to down Drung South 8-89 to 6-72 at the weekend.

It was payback of sorts for Lawn, which lost to Drung South narrowly in round four.

Graeme Wood was a standout for Lawn, winning all three rubbers he played.

Wood’s performance came in the singles section, where he downed Drung South’s number-two man Ben Brooksby 8-1.

For the Drungsters, it was Dylan Emmerson who shone.

He had a hand in three of the team’s six rubber wins for the day, including an 8-4 win against Horsham Lawn’s Hayden Farlow.

Lawn’s Sandra Casey and Andrea Cameron won an 8-7 tiebreaker against Rachel Mckinnon and Luisa Boddi, but the team could not quite get over the line.

It leaves Drung South secondlast on the ladder despite plenty of strong and competitive play this season. The Drungsters will take on +DYHQ DW WKH ZHHNHQG LQ WKH ¿QDO match before the break.

Lawn will travel to take on ladderleaders St Michaels, which was far too strong for winless Telangatuk East on Saturday.

The Saints had winners all through their line-up, while for Telangatuk East it was the women who added respectability to the scorecard.

Courtney Price and Kate Rogers had an 8-6 win against St Michaels’ Jess Mcdonald and Barbara Crough.

Rogers was involved in the visitors’ only other rubber win for the day when she teamed up with Karen Rees to defeat Crough and Simone O’brien.

Kalkee climbed into third place on the ladder with an 8-95 to 6-62 win against Haven.

The Kees’ strong showing in the opening doubles section – including an 8-0 win to Steve Schultz and David Pipkorn against Haven’s 7LPRWK\ 2I¿FHU DQG &RQQRU &KLY ell – set up the win.

Kalkee had two other 8-0 wins, including Anna Exell and Debbie Lawson’s rubber against Skye Davis and Kirby Knight.

The Kees will host Telangatuk East at the weekend.
