Artist journeys to Darwin

-

Ararat-based artist and sculptor Geoff Todd will present one of his paintings to Darwin City Council at a ceremony tomorrow.

Mr Todd’s painting, entitled Nexus, was bought by Northern Territory air conditioning and mechanical services company Airducter and donated to the council.

“Since my work is in and on the facades of both the Supreme Court and Parliament House in Darwin and collected by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, the lord mayor of Darwin and his councillors decided it was time the city itself owned a painting of mine and gratefully received it,” he said.

“A few years ago the lord mayor opened an exhibition of mine in Sydney, when he was a member of parliament in the NT.

“It will be great to catch up with him again.”

Mr Todd said the painting would hang in the public reception area at Darwin Town Hall.

He described Nexus as ‘a fun painting I made in 2012 that was exhibited in Darwin, as it obviously connects with the Northern Territory lifestyle’.

The painting depicts several people crowding into, and on top of, a four-wheel-drive, with a dog running alongside.

“The meaning of the word Nexus is ‘a connection, or series of connections, linking two or more things’,” Mr Todd said.

“The nexus between the Northern Territory and the four-wheel-drive vehicle is a real one.

“In the Northern Territory and especially in communities, the four-wheel-drive is part of the culture, the landscape, society, work and fun.”
