Close competitions in Stawell tennis

-

It was a sensational evening for Stawell tennis on Friday night with barely a breath of wind and the heat factor comfortable.

This allowed for many close sets. In the first encounter, Stawell Toyota held the edge all night with a hardfought win over a gallant Stawell Gold Mine, scraping through by four games.

Stawell Toyota was well served by experienced campaigners, the ever-agile Andrew Dunn and Jade Cross, who both won their three sets.

It was the younger generation of Stawell Gold Mine that stood up for its side, with Henry Clough and Jemima Harney victorious in their three sets.

In what was expected to be a tight tussle, David O. Jones Mitre 10 came away with an 18-game victory over Delahunty Plumbing.

Aylish O’donohue, Jonah O’shannessy and Holly Graveson were top performers for Mitre 10, winning all their sets.

Meanwhile, Joel Freeland continued on his merry way setting an example for the rest of his team, winning all three sets for the night, as did Will Mcdermott, another top performer for Delahunty Plumbing.

In the third and final match for the night, Grampians Joinery enjoyed a solid 19-game victory over Frewstal.

Frewstal was still a chance of an upset heading into the mixed sets, trailing by just 10 games. However, the Grampians Joinery team paired stronger to come out victors.

Lexi Collins and Molly Orr steered their side in the right direction, winning all three sets, while Luke Monaghan was strong for Frewstal, dropping just one of his sets for the night.

With finals not too far away it goes to show that any team can win on any given night. The competition is that close.
