Kernaghan on the road to Horsham
It is nearly 30 years since Lee Kernaghan burst onto the scene, but the Australian country music legend has guaranteed a unique experience for people who come to his show in Horsham next month.
Kernaghan last visited the Wimmera in May 2016.
The next year he launched his 25th Anniversary Album tour, commemorating a quarter of a century since his breakout single Boys from the Bush.
While the 25th Anniversary Album Tour delved into Kernaghan’s past, he said his current tour, in support of new album Backroad Nation, was about providing a fresh show for new and old fans alike.
“This is a brand new production and a brand new show,” he said.
“This is probably the biggest show I’ve ever taken out on the road in Australia in terms of the technology and the audio-visual setup and the lights and cameras. It’s really interactive.
“I just want people to have a great night out that they’re going to be
talking about and have great memories of for a long time to come.
“We’re going to take this to a whole new level.”
Kernaghan said his new album was fun and upbeat, and drew on plenty of personal experiences.
“There’s a lot of my DNA in these songs,” he said.
“The album has been a couple of years in the making and it’s songs about us – our way of life.
“The title track is called Backroad Nation, and one of my great passions in life is getting out on the road and feeling like the weight of the world falls off my shoulders.
“There’s nothing like a dirt road to really get you unwound.
“Rolling out a swag somewhere out in the bush, having a camp oven, a fire in the ground, boiling the billy and knocking back a few drinks with my mates is something I really love and something that’s encapsulated in the Backroad Nation song.
“I think it’s going to make people feel good.
“That’s what you want out of music: you want it to lift you up, you want to be able to have a barbecue with friends over or head out on a road trip and put that music on and have it be a great soundtrack to what you’re doing.”
Kernaghan will be supported by The Wolfe Brothers and Christie Lamb on his tour.
He said he was excited to return to the Wimmera – a place he had fond memories of.
In 2007 Kernaghan headlined a ‘Spirit of the Bush’ concert at Longerenong in support of drought-affected farmers. The event attracted 20,000 people.
He said the concert was a cherished memory.
“We did the big Spirit of the Bush concert there during the Millennium Drought and the way the community got together to support the local farming families is something that will stay in my heart forever,” he said.
Kernaghan will play at Horsham Town Hall on Thursday, June 13.
