Historic gates to be restored

-

Work to restore historic gates at Stawell’s Central Park is underway.

Northern Grampians Shire Council has removed the gates for restoration after receiving a Heritage Victoria permit for the project.

The heritage-listed wrought-iron gates, which commemorate the Boer War, are more than 100 years old.

Parts of the gates were damaged from a car incident last year.

Restorers will use an undamaged section as a pattern to create jigs to replicate scroll and detailed design.

The council estimates the gates will be back in place at Central Park in September.

It has erected temporary fencing, which will continue to allow patron access.
