Boomerang Bags in Stawell

-

Stawell’s War on Waste Group is a step closer to reducing the use of single-use plastic bags with a Boomerang Bag distribution point launched today.

The project, celebrated this morning at Newton’s Butchers in Main Street, is one of many the group is working on to reduce the use of plastic bags in the Wimmera city.

Group spokeswoman Helga Saunders said the idea was to get people thinking about their use of single-use plastic.

“People can take a bag and return it – but it’s okay if people don’t bring it back,” she said.

“Perhaps a donation to the group would be helpful.

“Our bags have a lovely screen-printed logo that might appeal to visitors.

“However, our main goal in providing Boomerang Bags is to reduce waste and inspire shoppers to reduce their use of single-use plastic bags.”

Halls Gap and Stawell’s Boomerang Bag sewing volunteers have made more than 200 bags to replenish stocks.

Stawell Men’s Shed members also supplied materials and constructed a stand for the bags.

The hope is other stores will host stands of Boomerang Bags.

People have already donated hundreds of metres of fabric and the group needs more sewing volunteers to keep up bag stocks.

A sewing group meets each Friday from 2pm to 4pm at Stawell Neighbourhood House.
