There’s nothing quite like mum

- BY DEAN LAWSON

If ever we needed a human example of something profound, it would surely be that mums are always mums.

As we approach another Mother’s Day and perhaps ponder what it all means and whether it’s all worth it, we can’t get past the fact that mums can be pretty special.

It’s obviously not the same for everyone. For a start, some people don’t have mums and some mums can be downright dreadful, at all sorts of levels.

But for many of us, mums sit on a matriarchal pedestal.

Let’s be honest, for young children and sometimes not-so-young children, Mother’s Day can be every day.

For the rest, singling out one day to celebrate mums, if nothing more, is a reminder of the role mums play in families, communities and society in general.

While Mother’s Day can be a simple fun occasion for children, often with help of dad, to celebrate their mums, for adults it can represent an opportunity to reinforce family bonds.

It can be a reminder to make a phone call or go for that visit – a chance to express appreciation for those many years of hard work and care.

Again, mums are always mums regardless of the age of everyone in a family and often wield enormous psychological and emotional power throughout a lifetime.

History tells us they are just as capable of bringing down empires as they are in creating them, especially when it comes to their children.

Mums are usually far from perfect but that can make them all the more endearing.

Whether it’s for making the best milkshakes or providing powerful direction, advice, and critically, love, there is nothing quite like having a good mum.

So if you are lucky enough to have a good one, make a fuss of her this Mother’s Day.
