Tigers run to the end

-

Round four of Mininera and District Football League senior competition sees a few clubs in unfamiliar positions.

Great Western and Woorndoo-mortlake sit on top of the ladder undefeated, last year’s grand finalists Wickliffe-lake Bolac and Tatyoon are just outside the top five and Moyston-willaura is yet to notch up a win for the season.

While Great Western recorded another easy win at the weekend, the big story was Woorndoo-mortlake defeating Wickliffe-lake Bolac.

The Tigers came out firing to take an early lead in the first quarter, however a Magpie fight-back saw the scores level at half-time.

There were only five goals scored in the whole second half and although ‘Wicky Bolac’ had plenty of opportunities to score, Woorndoo-mortlake held them off to come out on top by four points. The team will be looking to continue its good form in this week’s tough game when it hosts Penshurst.

Penshurst has had a couple of tough games early in the season and has proved itself a contender, its most recent match a 56-point win over Tatyoon.

The game was relatively close all day, but a 5.6 to 0.0 last quarter broke the game open.

Ben Hunt and Josh Gunning were on song in front of goal, booting five and four goals respectively, while better players included Chay Deary and Justin Eales.

This week will be a good test of where Great Western is at when the Lions take on Tatyoon.

Despite the loss to Penshurst, Tatyoon can never be underestimated. With quality players such as Mitch Cronin, Rhys Cronin, Jack Antonio and David Brady firing it is only a matter of time before the team has a breakthrough.

Great Western’s hard work and seasons of recruiting and building is finally paying off, and it will be looking forward to showing the league it really means business.

Lions Andrew Cameron and Gerrard Cunningham kicked 11 goals between them in Saturday’s win over Hawkesdale-macarthur, and the team will be looking to them to put on another great performance this week.

In other games, Caramut plays Wickliffe-lake Bolac, Lismore Derrinallum hosts Moyston-willaura, Hawkesdale-macarthur and Glenthompson-dunkeld do battle at Macarthur and Ararat plays SMW Rovers.
