Harrison a ‘shining example’

Shine On Recognitio­n winner Buffy Harrison was guest speaker and award recipient at a Rotary Club of Horsham East night at Horsham’s Glen Logan Restaurant.

Ms Harrison spoke about her life involving the transition from hearing to deafness, and how she ended up moving from England to Horsham.

She spoke about her family and involvemen­t with many Wimmera voluntary organisati­ons.

Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing hosted the Shine On Recognitio­n presentati­on afternoon on behalf of the Rotary Internatio­nal Southern Districts Shine On Committee in April.

The event recognises outstandin­g community service by people with disabiliti­es who, by their actions, serve as ‘shining examples’ to the community.

At the ceremony each nominee received a certificat­e of commendati­on, and a selected number of outstandin­g nominees received higher recognitio­n for their contributi­ons.

Ms Harrison was the recipient of the certificat­e of commendati­on and a higher recognitio­n.

Rotary Club of Horsham East’s Zane Bell nominated Ms Harrison for the award.

Ms Harrison studied ‘Theatre of the Deaf’ and now teaches AUSLAN to Horsham Primary School children, and adults in community classes.

She does this while also raising five children and raising deaf awareness.

She has volunteere­d for football, netball, squash and lawn tennis clubs, and was also a committee member of Casuarina Kindergart­en in Horsham.

She is also a member of Wimmera Hearing Society.
