Baptist on fire

Wimmera-trained gelding Barry The Baptist continued his hot streak of success in the region with a win in Sunday’s $40,000 Apsley Cup.

The five-year-old has been in sterling form for Stawell-based trainer Paul Jones, saluting in April’s Stawell Gold Cup and running a close second at Casterton last month.

With jockey Jarrod Fry in the saddle, the pre-race favourite jumped well and settled two wide, six lengths behind the leader.

Fry made his move at the halfway point of the 2000-metre race, hitting the lead at 800 metres and holding on down the straight to score by nearly two lengths from Dane Smith-trained Tre Dieci.
