Mel­bourne Cup tour

Wim­mera towns Brim and St Ar­naud are in the run­ning to win $50,000 as lo­ca­tions the iconic Mel­bourne Cup will visit on its na­tion­wide tour this year.

Vic­to­ria Rac­ing Club an­nounced the cup would make stops at Mel­bourne, Bal­larat, Tal­la­rook, Koon­drook, St Ar­naud, Brim, Co­bram, Euroa, Phillip Is­land and Bun­yip on the Vic­to­rian leg of the tour.

This year 24 of the tour lo­ca­tions across Aus­tralia, in­clud­ing Brim and St Ar­naud, will be al­lo­cated a bar­rier for the 2019 Mel­bourne Cup.

Barriers will be drawn at ran­dom through­out the tour, and the town that draws the bar­rier of the Mel­bourne Cup-win­ning horse will be pre­sented with a cash prize of $50,000 to be put to­wards a char­ity for a lo­cal com­mu­nity ini­tia­tive.

The club said it re­ceived a record-break­ing num­ber of ap­pli­ca­tions from across Aus­tralia.

This year the cup cel­e­brates the 100th an­niver­sary of its unique three-handled de­sign.

Brim Ac­tive Com­mu­nity Group mem­ber Colleen Mcpher­son said be­ing part of the tour would be an un­for­get­table ex­pe­ri­ence.

“We’re ex­tremely ex­cited to welcome the Mel­bourne Cup to Brim when it vis­its as part of its 17th an­nual tour,” she said.

“We look for­ward to wel­com­ing the iconic tro­phy and shar­ing the magic of the peo­ple’s cup with the com­mu­nity.”

St Ar­naud Agri­cul­tural So­ci­ety Sec­re­tary Tony Marland said the visit would pro­vide lo­cals an op­por­tu­nity to ‘unite to­gether’.
