Ir­win gains in­valu­able ex­pe­ri­ence

For­mer Hor­sham dis­trict gym­nast Hud­son Ir­win will re­turn home with valu­able in­ter­na­tional ex­pe­ri­ence un­der his belt af­ter com­pet­ing at the 30th Sum­mer Uni­ver­si­ade in Naples, Italy.

Ir­win, who now lives and trains in Queens­land af­ter be­gin­ning his ca­reer at the Na­timuk and Dis­trict Gym­nas­tic Club, was part of a three-man Aus­tralian team com­pet­ing at the Uni­ver­si­ade, also known as the World Univer­sity Games.

The games draw the most tal­ented univer­sity ath­letes from around the world and are the largest multi-sport event in the world apart from the Olympic Games.

Ir­win placed 36th out of 44 com­peti­tors in the men’s in­di­vid­ual all-around stand­ings, three spots be­hind Aus­tralian team­mate Heath Thorpe.

His best ap­pa­ra­tus re­sults came in the high bar, where he fin­ished 35th out of 50 com­peti­tors, and the par­al­lel bars, where he fin­ished 38th of 50.
