Pros, amateurs to clash
Professional and amateur golfers will tee off in a Western Open golf tournament in Horsham this weekend.
The competition, on Saturday and Sunday, will bring together the best players from a Ladbrokes PGA Proam series and Golf Victoria’s Ivo Whitton and Susie Tolhurst amateur events.
An inaugural 36-hole Western Open scratch event last year thrust Horsham into the national golfing spotlight.
The event features a large field of professional golfers playing alongside Victoria’s best amateurs for the title of Western Open champion.
It is part of a pro-am series that features 140 tournaments across Australia and the South Pacific, including 35 in metropolitan and regional Victoria.
Last year’s Western Open was the first tournament of its kind in Victoria where professionals and elite amateurs competed for the same title.
It was also easily the largest and most prestigious golf tournament in Horsham for years.
Tasmanian and 2018 Victorian Open champion Simon Hawkes shot nine under the card to win last year’s title from Victorian Peter Wilson and amateur Adam Tsiami.
Hawkes, who had led overnight, clinched the title by a shot after scoring a birdie on the final hole.
Horsham Telstra Store has strongly backed the tournament as naming-rights sponsor and The Weekly Advertiser and radio stations 3WM and MIXX FM are also among sponsors.
