Upgrades for Buloke lakes

Authorities anticipate more visitors will enjoy the outdoors in Buloke Shire after a major upgrade of camping facilities at three of the region’s lakes.

Member for Mallee Anne Webster said Wooroonook, Tchum and Watchem lakes, which attract up to 2000 visitors and campers during peak season, now had additional showers, toilets and car parking.

“The lakes now offer improved walking trails, each with detailed signs on local history and the environment as well as each area’s distinct Aboriginal heritage that makes this land so special,” she said.

“With a range of activities including swimming, boating, windsurfing, fishing, water skiing and walking, there is plenty for people to do when they come and visit this magical part of Victoria.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Minister Michael Mccormack said a $735,000 Federal Government investment in the upgrades had provided community infrastructure while supporting the rural area’s economic future.

“This project supported five construction jobs, creates four ongoing roles, and gives an immediate economic stimulus to the region,” he said.

“Making the region more attractive to visit and stay in is vital to boosting the local tourism sector, getting more visitors to stay and supporting local farmers and businesses during this harsh drought.”

Buloke mayor Carolyn Stewart said the upgrades were welcome additions to the lakes.

“Our lakes are vital to our communities in providing for both recreational pursuits and social connectedness,” she said.

“They are popular with tourists, drawing many new and returning visitors each year.”
