College elects new leaders
Colby Mcdonald is proud to be Horsham St Brigid’s College’s first indigenous school captain as part of the first female-led leadership team since 2013.
Colby and Lotus Martin, both 17, started at the college in year seven and have been elected captains for their final year of schooling in 2022.
Colby said being the college’s first indigenous school captain was ‘a very good thing’.
“There are a lot of new opportunities for younger indigenous people,” she said.
“I’m very excited to represent me and my indigenous heritage.”
Colby said she hoped for a ‘normal’ year 12 following see-sawing restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Hopefully there will be no lockdowns, with everyone vaccinated, and we have a clear run to a good year,” she said.
“The school definitely made transitioning from online to back to the classroom multiple times very easy, so it didn’t feel stressful whatsoever.
“We’re all just here for unity and to have a good time, really.”
Lotus agreed it was great to be back working alongside her classmates for the last term of 2021.
She said ‘bringing the school back together after two separated years’ was her key priority as captain.
“We will look at doing as many activities as possible to get the school back involved in the community,” she said.
Lotus plans to pursue a career in allied health after graduation, while Colby has her sights set on becoming a social worker.
Andrew Taylor and Maggie Heinrich will be vice-captains in 2022.
