Police, paramedics and Metropolitan Fire Service crews were called to the suburban Northfield facility on yesterday morning.

Department for Correctional Services Deputy Chief Executive Jackie Bray said police were continuing to investigate.

“One staff member has been taken to hospital in a stable condition with an unidentified illness,” Ms Bray said.

Police said the MFS dealt with the hazardous materials incident but declared the area safe after about two hours.

They said the package had been seized for further testing.
