YouTube’s 2018 titans
A celebrity baby, karaoke with a Beetle and a yodelling child have all racked up millions of Australian views on YouTube this year.
YouTube’s annual wrap of trending clips also revealed Aussie musicians 5 Seconds Of Summer, Iggy Azalea and Amy Shark were the country’s most watched.
This year, viewers swung towards international content produced by mainstream celebrities including Kylie Jenner and James Corden.
Jenner’s baby-reveal video, To Our Daughter, topped the list with more than 77 million views since February.
The 23-minute Paul McCartney Carpool Karaoke clip has garnered almost 36 million views since June, while a video of a young boy yodelling in Walmart was watched almost 60 million times this year.
YouTuber couple David Dobrik and Liza Koshy’s ‘We broke up’ video was viewed more than 46 million times since June.
Australia also tended towards videos from the UK and US more than most other countries.
Fewer local videos made the list this year:
Australian comedy duo Superwog’s video mocking highway patrol police officers was the only Aussie video in the top 10.
More than 10 million Australian adults now spend an average of 24 hours every month consuming YouTube content, according to Nielsen Digital Content Ratings.
And nine in 10 views of Australian videos were from overseas audiences. Tamsin Rose
