Coke axes plastic straws
Environmental groups have welcomed Coca-Cola Amatil’s decision to replace plastic straws with paper in Australian outlets.
The company said yesterday that it would phase out plastic straws and stirrers in Australia over the next two months and replace them with recyclable ones. Group managing director Alison Watkins said the decision was part of Coke’s efforts to reduce single-use plastics.
Clean Up Australia’s managing director Terrie-Ann Johnson said Coke was doing the right thing but urged consumers to be careful to dispose of biodegradable straws properly.
