The West Australian - - SUMMER RACING - Ernie Manning

Handicapping panellists are set to install fresh runners in Friday night’s $450,000 Group 1 WA Pacing Cup (2936m) after receiving 30 nominations for the Gloucester Park feature.

Gotta Go Gabbana, Hands and wheels, Im Full Of Excuses and Simba Bromac are among prominent entrants who missed last Friday’s Group 1 Fremantle Pacing Cup (2536m).

The WA Pacing Cup’s 12 starters and two emergencies will be named today.

“At least two newcomers are likely to force their way into the field when panellists make final decisions,” Gloucester Park Harness Racing president John Burt said.

“Selectors will face a difficult task to eliminate some of the Fremantle Pacing Cup runners.

“A number of the unplaced division were out of luck.”

Fremantle Pacing Cup runners Our Jimmy Johnstone and Mitch Maguire could be balloted out.

Trainer Annie Belton is optimistic Gotta Go Gabbana will earn a start.

“She ran a great second after racing up to four-wide in the free-for-all (last Friday night),” Belton said. “She drew seven and was trapped on the outside.

“It was a top effort to finish only a half-head behind Im Full Of Excuses. Gotta Go Gabbana is jumping out of her skin despite the tough run. She’s won 11 races and deserves her chance in top company.”

WA Derby winner Hands and wheels was a last-start Clipsal Pace winner on January 4.

The Nathan Turvey-trained five-year-old Simba Bromac has won 19 of 32 starts.

Turvey will be ineligible to drive in the cup after receiving a 23-day suspension for careless driving in the Fremantle Pacing Cup.

Sydney star My Field Marshal, who has won 26 races and earned $1.3 million, heads WA Pacing Cup entries. Trainer Tim Butt said My Field Marshal had thrived since he won the Fremantle Pacing Cup.

The Group 1 Miracle Mile winner opened his WA campaign with a victory in the Group 2 Village Kid Pace (1730m) on December 28.

Co-trainers Greg and Skye Bond’s eight WA Pacing Cup entries are led by Fremantle Pacing Cup runner-up Galactic Star. They have also nominated unplaced runners Saying Grace, El Jacko, Vampiro, Our Max Phactor, Mitch Maguire and Our Jimmy Johnstone to backup on Friday.

Rock Diamonds is an additional WA Pacing Cup entrant.
