Ancient pinot

The West Australian - - NEWS -

If you want to drink like a Roman emperor, then raise a glass of pinot noir.

DNA tests show that the grape variety is the nearest match to the grapes drunk in Italy 2000 years ago.

The discovery was made by testing 28 grape seeds from Roman and medieval archaeological sites in France and comparing their genetic sequences with grapes of today.

Pinot noir, known as “the king of grapes”, proved similar.
