Jor­dan Thomp­son is through to the sec­ond round of the Libema Open in the Nether­lands af­ter a straight-sets win over Tommy Paul.

The 25-year-old, who was Aus­tralia’s last man stand­ing at the French Open be­fore bow­ing out to Juan Martin del Potro in the third round, ral­lied to see off the Amer­i­can qual­i­fier 3-6 6-1 6-4 in 1hr. 42min. at the grass-court tour­na­ment on Mon­day.

The world No.62 will play Aus­tralian Open quar­ter­fi­nal­ist Frances Ti­afoe today.

The Amer­i­can beat Por­tuguese No.1 Joao Sousa 6-2 7-6 (7-0), a re­sult which ended a three-match los­ing streak for the 21-year-old. Sixth-seeded Ti­afoe edged out Thomp­son 3-6 6-4 6-3 in Aca­pulco when they last met ear­lier this year.

In the women’s draw, Aus­tralia’s Priscilla Hon lost her first round match to Spain’s Paula Ba­dosa, 6-4 6-3.

Rus­sia’s Mar­garita Gas­paryan fought back to up­set sev­enth seed Vik­to­ria Kuz­mova in their first round clash.

Un­seeded Gas­paryan was within two points of be­ing elim­i­nated but turned it round in the sec­ond set against the Slo­vakian to win 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in more than two hours.

The open­ing day of the WTA grass-court tour­na­ment at Not­ting­ham was rained out with­out a match be­ing played.
