Council lock in regional airport grant
THE MARANOA Regional Council has successfully funded $15,500 for regional airports which will go towards helping airports in Mitchell, Injune and Surat.
Maranoa councillor Cameron O’Neil said the funding would help the council with maintenance and infrastructure works it needed to achieve, particularly the rejuvenation of the Injune helipad
“The Regional Aviation Program is the funding program which we received the contribution for up in Injune and under that program they have the Regional Airstrip Upgrade Program and that is where the funding has come from,” Cr O’Neil said.
Now the council has locked in this funding, it is turning its mindset to another initiative by lodging a letter to the federal government for ongoing support through this program.
“From that program we have now turned our mind to supporting the initiative to advocate fairly strongly to the federal government that we would like this initiative to continue this year and for the future, so that is what the basis of our letter is and will go to our federal member David Little Proud,” Cr O’Neil said.
“We hope through this letter and as we head into the federal May budget, this is the time they are counting their pennies and looking at what programs to continue and what ones not to continue, so this is a campaign to make sure a program like this that supports local communities continues,” he said.
“The reality for us is that the regional airports of Mitchell, Surat and Injune don't have the revenue base that Roma does, so Roma supports works and upgrades that have to be occur in those three airports.”
The funding will go towards the rejuvenation of the helipad and the rebuilding of the signalling area in Injune.
