SOCCER: Roma District Junior Soccer is awarding a free kick to parents this weekend, with registration fees being sent to the bench for the opening round of fixtures at Noel Kerr Oval on Saturday.

Club president Tyson Golder said the scheme – to waive fees for the first weekend – was a great way to let children fall in love with the game before guardians were asked to pay membership.

“If you’re not sure whether your kids will enjoy it, just get them to come down and have a go,” he said.

“The number one thing I’d like to see is kids go home after having some fun, which is what it’s all about.

“I really believe we need to keep as many sports going in the Maranoa as possible and soccer is great in that it is open to everyone of different skill levels.

“Soccer is very inclusive and one of the number-one things I encourage is sportsmanship – that we have fun and treat everyone with respect.”

The season will wrap up around the September school holidays, with games occurring every weekend except for school holiday periods.

Adding to an exciting season ahead, the club is busy scheduling a set of home and away friendly matches against St George, which Mr Golder is excited about.

“I think the kids are really going to enjoy those games against a different competition.” he said.

The under-6s and under-8s will play first at 1pm, with under-11s at 2pm followed by the under-16s hybrid game at 3pm, which will feature a smattering of adults to make things interesting.

GAME ON: Roma Junior Soccer president Tyson Golder is excited for the season kick-off.
